Preface
About twenty years ago, I had a remarkably interesting conversation with my mentor, Dr. Marvin M. Johnson, who was the recipient of the first U.S. Medal of Technology & Innovation. During that conversation, he asked me about my thoughts on wide-scale technology commercialization in a promising new area that I had been working on. I responded by enthusiastically outlining my thoughts for two whole hours. What came next would have a lifelong impact on me! He congratulated me on my in-depth technical knowledge on the topic, following which he identified a practical aspect that I had not fully factored into my analysis. This led to significant reassessment of my thoughts on the subject. |

I realized that I had missed out on one practical aspect that turned out to be a critical element in determining the problem solution.
The two main reasons were a) I was distracted by the numerous scientifically interesting aspects of the complex problem which in retrospect were less important, and b) I was biased due to emotional attachment to certain aspects.
It became apparent to me that, in addition to innovative science/engineering, efficient solutions to complex problems required a robust practical understanding of all critical aspects and subsequent dispassionate addressing of all critical challenges. Since that day, I made it a mission to improve my ability to look at problems in a holistic manner by first identifying all critical aspects and then focusing on them in an unbiased manner.
CO2 reduction via technology-based solutions is a topic that has been close to my heart for the past several years. This book is my attempt to share the critical aspects related to this topic in a concise manner. I have strived to be concise (which ironically was very time consuming) to ensure that the critically needed information is available to the readers without burden from irrelevant data.
Public opinion on anthropogenic CO2 emissions and climate change varies over a wide spectrum- Some want to take immediate action to drastically reduce emissions, some are in favor of a cautious approach, some others are either disinterested and/or disengaged from the issue, while some are dismissive of the relationship between anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. I am hopeful that everyone, irrespective of their thoughts on climate change, will gain some fresh insights from the comparative analysis of low-carbon technologies. I have ensured that the analysis provided in this book is based on data compiled from the most credible sources available.
